Annual Weekend of Food Festival Gluttony

25 Sep

Well, it’s happened for the second year in a row.  The last weekend in September seems to be food festival mania in DFW.  I present my ambitious festival food eating schedule for the weekend:

Friday: Opening day for the Fried Food Festival.  Oops, I meant the State Fair.  The “novel” fried item garnering the most pre-Fair press this year is the chicken fried bacon, but Sodolak’s Original Country Inn in Snook has been serving this artery-clogging specialty for years with the majority of the diners reporting that deep frying bacon makes it too soggy.  Worth the calories to try at the Fair?  We’ll see how tempted I am.  The fried banana split sounds tasty though.

Saturday: Opa!  It’s time to hit the Greek Food Festival of Dallas.  The plated lunches and dinners are a good deal, but the highlight of this festival is always the dessert selection.  Loukoumades, anyone?  You can also stock up on baklava and kourabiethes by the dozen at the Agora Marketplace.

Sunday: Rounding out the weekend is the Japanese Fall Festival (Akimatsuri) presented by the Dallas Japanese Association.  Get there early!  Most vendors ran out of the popular food items a couple of hours into the festival last year.  Good chance to try the elusive takoyaki (fried octopus dumplings) if you haven’t already.

In addition, the Viet community will be celebrating Tê’t Trung Thu, literally “Mid-Autumn Holiday” this weekend. Several unique pastries are the specialty food items associated with this holiday.

Donna – Convinced my Husband to go to the festival specifically for the takoyaki. He was dubious at first, but they turned out to be his favorite thing there! They were fabulous. And you were right – We got them at 11:15 and by 12:30 the line was CRAZY! Thanks so much 🙂

Cathy, glad you enjoyed yourself! It was definitely the best of the 3 food festivals I attended this weekend.

Did you actually go to all these places in one weekend? We certainly had fun at the fair.

Margie, yes it was painful on the waistline 🙂 But a report to follow very soon summarizing all the feasting.

bah figures they’d reschedule the Arkansas-UT game for last weekend. McKinney had an Oktoberfest as well. And I didn’t even get to go to ACL….

Looks like it was a beating for the Hogs, too 😦

Beating doesn’t even begin to describe it. I’ve been telling people that Arkansas had three good plays…

At least I got to eat lunch at Hoover’s (a better than average CFS) and get an espresso from Cafe Medici (have to say it’s one of the better I’ve had).
