My Favorite Margarita is Moving! (Agave Azul)

21 Jul

DFW’s best margarita is found in the most unlikely place, in a quiet strip mall where Frankford Rd. dead ends into IH 35E in Carrollton.  Agave Azul offers more than 125 different varieties of tequila and features a different specialty margarita every month.  Here, equal emphasis is placed on drink and food, with creative Mexican dishes dominating the menu.  If you’re looking for a greasy Tex-Mex combo plate, Agave Azul isn’t for you.

According to Pegasus News, Agave Azul is relocating after over 3 years in its current location to a new location in historic downtown Carrollton.  A little part of me is sad that my favorite margarita is moving further south and farther away from me.  But mostly, I’m excited for Agave Azul because the new location is bound to give this tequileria more exposure and business.

On a recent visit to the Frankford location, I started with a potent margarita of the month:

The margaritas here are amazing, just look at the tequila selection you have to choose from!  I usually order the margarita of the month.  It’s something new every time I go, but it always pleases.  For the tequila purists, Agave Azul also offers a tequila shot sampler with four tequilas of your choices plus a chaser.

Though it was tempting to just nibble on the complimentary chips and dips while enjoying my divine margarita, the El Rey dish on the menu caught my eye.

A beef tenderloin filet grilled to medium perfection topped with a rich, earthy tequila adobo sauce.  On the side, grilled asparagus topped with chorizo hash, Mexican calabacitas (squash topped with queso fresco), and a delightful mango pineapple relish.

No one would expect food and drinks this good from a Mexican restaurant in a strip mall at the end of a road that is mostly storage warehouses.  I think the new location in a pedestrian oriented development with a downtown revival theme will suit Agave Azul just fine.
