Carrollton Location of Cowboy Chicken Opens

A third branch of the local chain Cowboy Chicken opened in Carrollton this week on Hebron Pkwy just east of Midway Rd.  I had read favorable reviews of this chain in the past but haven’t found the chance to stop in until last night at the new location.  The verdict?  It’s a more Texan and much better version of Boston Market.  $6.99 buys a half chicken (mixed white meat and dark meat, white meat only is $1 more) with two sides.  Chicken was moist and well seasoned, to the point where the meat was flavored enough to stand alone without the skin.  From a personal preference, I wish the skin had a little more crispiness to it.  Sides of smooth, slightly peppery creamed spinach and fresh tasting golden fried okra and a nonoffensive dinner roll round out the affordable meal (which can easily feed two average appetites).

  2. Great report, Donna! My wife and I were fans of Boston Market, but felt it was overpriced for what we got. We also noticed the new Cowboy Chicken and wondered if it was any good. Now we know! Looking forward to going there. Thanks!!

  3. Donna, Cowboy Chicken was every bit as good as you said and then some. You must try the scrumptuous twice-baked potaters. YUM! On my next visit, I’m looking forward to trying the chicken enchiladas and that peppery creamed spinach.

  4. sounds delicious. i love, love, love fried okra. (an ex-boyfriend’s grandma used to make it from scratch with okra from her garden. it was almost reason enough to stay with him… jk)

I ate there last night too! I wonder if we were there at the same time? I was there around 7:15 or 7:30pm.

I thought the food had great flavor–altho I thought the chicken was just a little dry. I had the 1/4 chicken white with corn and mac & cheese. Corn was good, but mac and cheese was also a little dried out. Maybe if I got there at actual dinner time (6pm) the food might be a little better.

Still, I’m very happy to see this place open because I can eat “real food” (chicken, veggies, a roll) there versus “fast food” (burger, fries = fattening, greasy).

DUH! Now i see that your post is dated a few days before mine. So we couldn’t have been there at the same time.

I will try the enchiladas next. So much for “real food.” HA

  7. Tried chicken enchiladas at Cowboy Chicken tonight, not as impressive as I had hoped. The sour cream-verde sauce was far too salty, and the chicken a little on the dry side. The side of steamed butternut squash scores an A+, however. Golden butternut squash has a natural light sweetness, yum.
